Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can put a stop to fast-moving baseballs and others can withstand hurricane-force winds. How?

When it comes to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are rigorously tested for impact resistance.

Tests involve firing a two-by-four at the window to verify glass remains intact. We use our hurricane cannon to fire the wood, which covers 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We figured, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could come up with a fix that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was asked to help equip a historic building near Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s exactly what we did.

We modified our hurricane cannon to evaluate the home run-resistant windows. We shot baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would mimic the power of a home run.

Our tempered glass weathered the hits best because it’s more durable and safer than commonly used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It warrants a speed surpassing 100 mph and a height exceeding 100 feet to send a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s case, we determined the baseballs would be traveling at about 60 mph upon striking windows.

But we did more than what was expected and evaluated impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not worried about an MLB home run hurling at your residence, there are a lot of reasons to choose strong, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s ideal for homeowners who want an additional level of safety from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are raising the next great baseball player.

Consider the strengths and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Durable glass much like what is used in car windows.
  • Used where injuries from broken glass are a concern.
  • Normally fragments into small, square parts as opposed to sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t come apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To discover more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Charlotte at 704-228-9149. Or, book a free, in-home consultation online.
